Mahindra Susten has taken a significant step in empowering rural education through its STEM lab initiatives. We explored their commitment to community development and the impact of their projects
The Mahindra Group has been instrumental in enacting positive change across the country. Through this series the Echo highlights various initiatives undertaken by the Group bringing to the fore CSR initiatives undertaken by our companies to address pressing societal challenges.
This week, we explore Mahindra Susten’s, the Group’s renewable energy arm, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) lab initiatives in Dhokavada and Bikaner, Rajasthan.
The first STEM lab was built in Rajkiya Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Kharicharnan, Rajasthan, an all-girls school, benefiting over 500 girls, and the second lab at Government Secondary School, Dhokavada, Gujarat, benefiting over 300 students. As Mahindra Susten develops its renewable portfolio, more STEM labs will be introduced near their project locations, promoting digital and sustainable learning.
Why stem labs
Project sites are often located in the interior parts of India, where local schools lack basic facilities such as infrastructure, sanitation, and designated science and computer labs. The initiative to set up STEM labs aims to bridge the gap in access to quality education and equip students with practical skills in STEM subjects. By providing these labs we seek to empower young minds with the tools and knowledge necessary to pursue careers in technology and innovation, contributing to local development and fostering a skilled workforce for the future.
Overcoming challenges
Setting up STEM labs in rural areas like Dhokavada and Bikaner comes with many challenges. Issues such as finding suitable buildings or rooms for the lab, ensuring adequate electrical connections, and sourcing essential STEM equipment were encountered. Additionally, designing a curriculum that aligns with local educational standards and interests while fostering STEM skills was essential. Training teachers to use the lab equipment effectively and addressing cultural norms or socioeconomic barriers were other significant challenges that needed to be overcome.
Expected outcomes and impact measurement
The initiative aims to achieve several educational outcomes, including enhanced proficiency in STEM concepts and skills, heightened enthusiasm and curiosity about STEM disciplines among students, and the development of critical thinking, analytical skills, and creativity. The impact is measured by tracking student engagement, attendance, and performance. For instance, since introducing the STEM labs, student attendance has increased from 70% to 95-98%.
Training and ongoing support
To ensure effective use of the STEM lab facilities, Mahindra Susten has appointed a full-time STEM lab trainer in the schools. The trainer teaches both students and teachers, guiding them in performing various experiments and enhancing their learning experiences. Students have already conducted experiments like preparing drones, sensor machines for parking, and robotic cars. They are also provided with necessary interactive learning through digital resources.
Broader community development goals
The development of STEM labs aligns with Mahindra Susten’s broader vision for community development and sustainability. By establishing STEM labs in rural areas, Mahindra Susten aims to provide access to quality education in STEM subjects, promoting socio-economic development within communities. This initiative strengthens community bonds, promotes sustainable development practices, and ensures a brighter and more sustainable future for all stakeholders involved.
Through these initiatives, Mahindra Susten’s commitment to empowering rural education through STEM labs is not just about providing resources but also about fostering a culture of innovation and development at the grassroots level.
Students from class 3 to 12 can engage in over 600 different activities, fostering a hands-on learning environment.
In addition to these resources, Mahindra Susten has deployed an associate instructor in collaboration with their NGO partner Ennoble Social Innovation dedicated to assisting students and teachers in performing these activities seamlessly within the STEM Lab.
