On tractor business and future growth

In an interview with CNBCTV18, Dr. Anish Shah, MD and CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), expressed optimism for the tractor business, highlighting recovery aided by good monsoons and increased rural government spending. He anticipates a strong second half of the fiscal year, particularly during Navaratri.

Dr. Shah emphasised M&M's strategic strength and market leadership in the SUV and LCV segments, attributing success to robust teamwork and operational excellence. The company is expanding production capacity, especially for SUVs, with the upcoming 5-door Thar launch driving further growth.

M&M's commitment to sustainability is evident in its focus on electric vehicles (EVs), addressing pollution and reducing fuel import bills. The launch of ‘born electric’ vehicles mark a significant step toward innovation and sustainability. Dr. Shah acknowledged the higher costs of EVs but emphasised the importance of government incentives and charging infrastructure for adoption.

Addressing industry concerns, Shah maintained a confident stance on the government's efforts to ensure a business-friendly environment, reflecting M&M's proactive engagement with regulatory developments and adaptive strategy to navigate challenges.

Targeting product and revenue leadership in all areas

In an article published on Financial Express, Dr. Anish Shah, emphasises the company’s strategic focus on leading in revenue market share and product quality across all segments, including SUVs, electric vehicles (EVs), and two-wheelers. Dr. Shah highlighted M&M’s market leadership in SUV revenue and expressed confidence in achieving similar success in the EV segment.

M&M aims to excel in product quality and revenue market share. Dr. Shah noted the critical importance of revenue market share for profitability and the potential of "born electric" models, which are expected to significantly differ from current market offerings. He highlighted M&M’s comprehensive approach to EVs, including manufacturing lithium-ion batteries, with potential collaboration with Volkswagen.

Dr. Shah discussed the role of government incentives like the FAME scheme in promoting EV adoption, particularly noting its impact on the three-wheeler market. He acknowledged the gradual transition required for passenger EVs and remained open to exploring hybrid vehicles based on consumer demand.

Dr. Shah also highlighted M&M’s advancements in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), which has improved efficiency in maintenance and service operations, significantly reducing downtime and wait times for customers. He praised the new EV policy for encouraging domestic manufacturing and attracting global manufacturers to establish bases in India.

Preparing the workforce for a ‘just’ and green transition

A proactive approach to upskilling employees to support the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and other green technologies.

Mahindra is gearing up for substantial growth in its internal combustion engine (ICE) portfolio and is excited about the upcoming launch of its Born Electric SUVs. The company is implementing comprehensive reskilling programems across its workforce, including both officers and workmen, to adapt to new technologies such as EV architecture, battery handling, and high-voltage safety.

Beyond the automotive sector, Mahindra is expanding its skill-building initiatives across various businesses. For instance, Mahindra Susten's Skills Development Centre has trained over 14,500 technicians in both full and semi-skilled trades, while Mahindra Last Mile Mobility collaborates with Mahindra Logistics to train women in EV driving and employment opportunities in electric cargo delivery. Additionally, Mahindra is involved in the PM Drone Sakhi Yojana to train women in drone technology for sustainable agriculture.

Mahindra’s broader skilling programme aims to prepare 1 million youth, with a notable focus on women. The company has trained 765,107 women to date, including 228,540 in FY24 alone.
