When Mahindra & Mahindra decided to build the Jeep plant in Kandivali in the early 1960s, the company did not ignore the consequences of having a manufacturing plant so close to the city. We did not want to disturb the flora and fauna of the place, which had yet to be fully integrated into the city.
So, we decided that no trees would be cut to make way for the plant. “Not that there were many trees to cut. There were just three mango trees and a few orphan palms dotting the landscape, which knew the thrill of tender attention for the first time only in 1964-65 from a man who cared –T Mackay, our administration manager,” reveals an article published in the M&M Newsletter dated June 1972.
Now that you ask, what exactly is the "M&M Newsletter"? It's Echo's illustrious ancestor, who chronicled life at Mahindra many years ago. We’re bringing the old man back – by giving him a web page in most of our editions.
But for now, please zoom in to learn more about 'M&M Gardens,' which won ‘The Times of India rolling shield for the best factory garden' in 1969, as well as several other awards later. As we draw close to World Environment Day 2023, allow us to introduce you to a true Mahindra stalwart of yesteryears, T Mackay, a visionary who not only planted a garden but also held unwavering belief in the promise of tomorrow.
Here’s wishing you a greener, cleaner, and happier planet!
Yours truly,
Echo.
