Attar attributes much of his success to the unwavering support and camaraderie fostered within the LMM family
For Ayyaz Attar, preparing for the Tata Ultra Marathon 2024, commenced in October 2023, a meticulous four months prior to the event.
Preparation for success
Following a systematic plan provided by his running coach, Attar adhered to a regimen comprising interval runs, tempo runs and strength training throughout the week. Weekends were dedicated to long back-to-back runs, often on hilly terrain at Borivali National Park or Arey Colony, Goregaon aimed at building stamina and endurance.
A wake-up call to change
The inspiration to participate in marathons stemmed from a transformative moment in June 2018. During a medical test for term insurance, he received a wake-up call upon being diagnosed with pre-diabetes and high blood pressure due to his weight of 97 kilogram. Determined to enact a change, Attar began with walks and cycling before encountering a professional running group in Borivali in January 2019. Under the guidance of a coach, his running journey commenced, gradually evolving into an unforeseen and exhilarating pursuit, ultimately leading him to become an ultra-runner.
Overcoming obstacles
Challenges encountered during the race, notably cramping, were met with resilience and strategic measures. “Consulting fellow runners and my coach, I fortified my strength, endurance and most importantly, fine-tuned my nutrition and hydration plan. This meticulous approach, incorporating electrolytes, salt intake and energy sources tailored to my body’s needs, proved instrumental in warding off cramps during the race,” he recalls.
Beyond the finish line
The impact of this experience extends beyond running, permeating into personal and social spheres. Establishing connections with running comrades nationwide, spanning diverse professions, has enriched his social landscape. “Moreover, the discipline and commitment cultivated through running resonate in corporate endeavours, shaping my approach to time management and fostering a sense of fulfilment. I begin my day at 5 am, completing my work out by 7:30 am. Meeting with friends for an early morning run or workout session brings me joy and sets a positive tone for the rest of the day,” he says.
Strength in the community
The support and camaraderie fostered within the LMM family have been instrumental in his journey. Forming fitness groups and sharing daily workouts via WhatsApp channels foster a culture of motivation and accountability. “Moreover, the encouragement from the CEO serves as a driving force, propelling me to push boundaries and strive for excellence within and beyond the realm of running,” he says.
Future horizons
Embarking on ultra-marathons like the Khardungla Challenge in Ladakh, known as the world’s highest, scheduled for September 2024, and the Border Run from Jaisalmer to Asutar, a 100 km journey slated for December 2024, represents significant milestones on my running journey. Each race presents distinctive tests of human endurance, symbolising new heights to conquer in my pursuit of running excellence.
