Join hands for a sustainable future

This pioneering venture in Li-ion battery recycling ensures responsible EV battery disposal

In a stride towards environmental sustainability, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited (MLMML) and Attero, a global leader in Lithium-ion(Li-ion)  battery recycling and e-waste management, have forged a strategic collaboration. This partnership, unveiled on December 21, 2023, signifies a proactive effort to address the burgeoning environmental concerns associated with electric vehicle (EV) battery disposal.

MLMML, a frontrunner in electric vehicle technologies, boasts a diverse array of Li-ion electric 3-wheelers, including models such as Treo, Treo Plus, Treo Zor, Treo Yaari and Zor Grand. The collaboration with Attero underscores MLMML's commitment to sustainable practices, with a specific focus on the recycling and reuse of Lithium-ion batteries.

What is EV battery recycling and why is it important?

EV battery recycling, particularly the recycling of Li-ion batteries, plays a pivotal role in addressing critical environmental challenges. The modern ubiquity of Li-ion batteries in gadgets, renewable energy and electric vehicles poses recycling challenges, leading to supply security issues and environmental harm. Attero, founded in 2008, has emerged as a pioneer in this domain, achieving an outstanding recovery rate for precious materials at its Roorkee facility.

Attero's Li-ion recycling process, a circular economy approach

Attero's state-of-the-art recycling plant in Roorkee, Uttarakhand is equipped to process and recycle various Li-ion battery chemistries. Their 360-degree recycling process ensures responsible collection, logistics, handling, packaging, safe destruction and up to 100% recovery of valuable battery metals, contributing to a carbon-positive circular economy.

How Li-ion batteries are recycled?

The intricate process of Li-ion battery recycling involves refurbishing batteries with potential for a second life and recycling those unsuitable for reuse. Attero's efficient methods lead to the extraction of critical metals like cobalt, nickel and lithium, addressing end-of-life battery problems with transparency and tracking throughout the process.

Economic and environmental impact

Establishing a Li-ion battery recycling facility demands significant investment, emphasising the economic and environmental challenges. Attero's unique patented urban mining technologies contribute to the recovery of critical materials (>98% efficiency), ensuring battery-grade purity and a positive impact on the environment.

MLMML collaboration with Attero heralds a new era in sustainable EV practices. This partnership is driving the industry towards a green horizon by ensuring responsible EV battery disposal and embracing a circular economy approach.
