Watch some memorable moments as Alex Lynn waved the Indian flag on the podium in London after his Formula E victory
Mahindra Racing, part of the Mahindra Group, took an incredible maiden Formula E victory in the Heineken® London E-Prix Round 13. It was an impressive win for Alex Lynn, who was born in Romford, East London, just 10 miles from the racetrack, and marked a historic day for both the driver and the team. The win came off the back of a podium for Alex, the day before in the first of the two weekend’s races, when he finished in third place.
Rounds 12 and 13 of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship took place on a brand-new circuit in London, which is uniquely the first indoor/outdoor racetrack, snaking through the ExCeL centre and the streets around.
In Saturday’s qualifying session, Alex put his M7Electro racing car through to Super Pole for the sixth time this season and scored his first three points of the weekend, going on to secure the Pole Position. In the E-Prix, he led for the first half and eventually crossed the line in the third position to take his second Formula E career podium. His teammate Alexander Sims was hit on the first lap and was forced to retire due to accident damage.
Alex continued his stellar qualifying form on Sunday, collecting the first point of the day for setting the fastest lap in group qualifying and securing his seventh Super Pole appearance. Starting from third on the grid, he executed the perfect race to be crowned the winner on his home turf. The result marked his first Formula E race victory and third podium, all of which he has achieved with Mahindra Racing this season. The weekend’s points haul elevates Alex to sixth in the driver’s standings, just 17 points off championship leader Nyck De Vries, with all to play for in the season finale in Berlin on August 14-15.
Speaking about the win, Alex Lynn, Driver, Mahindra Racing, said, “It’s hard to put my feelings in words, but to be honest, I can’t believe this has happened — it’s as special as it gets. Formula E has been an interesting journey for me, so winning it is unbelievably special. We had to make it happen today, and we did. I get the pleasure of driving the car, and I am thankful to the whole team; there’s not a group of guys and girls that doesn’t stay longer and wake up earlier than them, and I am thrilled for the whole team.”
Commenting on the win, Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal, Mahindra Racing, said: “That is our fifth victory in Formula E, and it is sweet! Ever since we unloaded the car, Alex has been fast and on it, and he has been spectacular all weekend. A win and a podium, a Pole Position and fastest in group qualifying have shown the strength of the package here in London. To hear the Indian national anthem on the podium for the first time since Marrakesh in Season 5 was an unbelievably special moment. We are going to enjoy this result and look forward to ending the season on a high in Berlin — we’re right back in the hunt now.”
