Recommitting to the Future of Sustainable Mobility

As Formula E begins its first season as an FIA World Championship, Mahindra has reaffirmed its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable mobility technologies by committing to Gen3 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, starting 2022.

Mahindra is the first team and manufacturer to do so. “I salute Mahindra Racing as the first manufacturer to commit to the next era of the discipline,” said Jean Todt, President, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).

Formula E is the first and only sport to be net zero carbon from inception. Gen3 marks a new era of performance and efficiency advances, including more powerful, lighter cars, faster charging and cost controls.

“Formula E plays a strategic role in realising Mahindra’s vision of the future of mobility through our race to road strategy,” said Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Chairman, Mahindra Racing. One of Formula E’s founding teams and the only Indian manufacturer, Mahindra has been on the grid ever since the inaugural race in 2014. “It is positive to see a founding team continue with us on a shared mission to develop electric vehicle technology and promote sustainable mobility,” said Mr Todt.

During the period between 2014 - 2018, Mahindra Racing has claimed four E-Prix victories, 18 podiums and 690 championship points, which makes them one of the most consistent and respected outfits on the grid. “We are here for the long run,” said Dilbagh Gill, CEO and Team Principal, Mahindra Racing.

Mahindra has a strong belief in Formula E’s ongoing role as an essential testing ground for future race-to-road EVs and sustainable technologies. The company aims to put half a million EVs on Indian roads by 2025. “We aim to be among the most prominent manufacturers of EVs in India,” said Dr. Goenka.

Mahindra Racing unveils All-British driver line-up to headline Seventh season of Formula E

Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn were introduced recently as the new driver line-up for Mahindra Racing, by former Formula 1 World Champion and electric car devotee Damon Hill, in a virtual launch broadcast. Nick Heidfeld, an integral part of Mahindra Racing since Season 2, continues as official test and reserve driver. Maurice Lacroix, expert watchmaker, comes aboard as Official Timekeeper.

The virtual launch also saw the unveiling of the M7 Electro, this season’s race car. With dedicated e-transmission fluid developed by team partner Shell, and a powertrain developed by Mahindra Racing in conjunction with ZF Friedrichshafen AG, the M7 Electro is ready to showcase new technologies that can benefit passenger EVs.

“The team has been working incredibly hard to develop the M7 Electro Challenger and with the strong driver pairing, I’m confident we will be back to securing podiums this season,” said Dilbagh Gill, CEO and Team Principal, Mahindra Racing.
